Growth Begins Where Certainty Ends

Choosing Growth Over Comfort

Lessons from a journey shaped by change, courage, and adaptability
If there is one thread that runs through my life and career, it is a willingness to embrace change before I have all the answers.
I grew up in Mumbai and completed my MBA at SCMHRD, Pune. During campus placements, I received an opportunity to join Philips in Gurgaon. In 2010-11, Gurgaon was not widely regarded as the safest city for women, and there was significant family pressure to decline the offer.
Yet I knew opportunities like this do not come often.
I convinced my parents, packed my bags, and moved to Gurgaon alone.
That decision became the first of many leaps into the unknown.
Life and career have since taken me across Mumbai, Pune, Gurgaon, Chennai, and back to Mumbai. Along the way, I navigated a cross-border marriage while my husband was based in the United States, relocated to Chennai without knowing the language or the city, raised a young family while pursuing increasingly demanding leadership roles, and moved cities multiple times in pursuit of growth. Family played a key role indeed.
Each transition exposed me to a different culture, a different way of thinking, and a different way of working.
What began as a series of geographical moves gradually became a masterclass in adaptability.
Every new city required me to build relationships from scratch, understand local nuances, earn trust, and find my footing in unfamiliar environments. Over time, I learned that uncertainty becomes less intimidating when you have successfully navigated it before.
Looking back, these experiences shaped my professional leadership style as much as any formal role. They taught me to stay curious, embrace diverse perspectives, remain calm during ambiguity, and adapt quickly when circumstances change. Not surprisingly, many of the organizations and teams I have supported were themselves navigating growth, transformation, integration, and change. Those experiences allowed me to contribute with greater empathy, resilience, and confidence.

Five years after moving to Chennai, I was offered a larger leadership opportunity in Gurgaon. By then, I was a mother to a two-year-old son. Once again, the choice involved disrupting a life we had carefully built. Yet I chose growth over comfort. Supported by my incredible parents and amazing partner, who have stood by me through every chapter of my journey, I relocated with my son and started over yet again.
Like many parents, I worried about what these moves would mean for him. Would changing cities, schools, and surroundings make life harder? What I discovered was quite the opposite.
Every transition exposed him to new people, different cultures, unfamiliar environments, and fresh ways of thinking. He learned to make new friends, adapt quickly, appreciate diversity, and become comfortable with change. From hearing different languages around him to understanding local customs and traditions, each move broadened his perspective in ways no classroom could.
Watching him navigate these transitions reminded me that some of life's most valuable lessons are learned through experience. The ability to embrace uncertainty, build connections from scratch, adapt to new environments, and thrive in unfamiliar situations is a skill that no school curriculum can fully teach. Yet it is increasingly becoming one of the most important life skills of our time.
What I did not fully appreciate at the time was how these experiences were shaping both of us.
Every move taught us how to adapt quickly, build relationships in unfamiliar environments, navigate ambiguity, and remain resilient through change. The more we experienced change, the less we feared it. Instead, we began to see it for what it often is: an opportunity to learn, grow, and expand our horizons.
And then life came full circle.
After many years, our family had the opportunity to return to Mumbai.
Coming back to the city where it all began felt special. Yet unlike the young graduate who left home years earlier, I returned with experiences gathered across cities, cultures, businesses, and life stages.
Today, when people ask me what has contributed most to my growth, I rarely talk about titles or positions.
I think about the decisions to move when staying would have been easier.
The willingness to start over in unfamiliar environments.
The support of family that made those choices possible.
And the belief that every change, however uncomfortable, carries the possibility of growth.
We are living in a world that is changing faster than ever before. Careers are becoming less linear. Industries are transforming. The skills that helped us succeed yesterday may not be enough tomorrow.
In such a world, adaptability is no longer a nice-to-have.
And risk-taking is no longer optional.
If you are aspirational, you must be willing to take punts.
Not reckless risks.
Thoughtful risks.
The kind that stretch your capabilities, expose you to new experiences, and help you discover strengths you did not know you possessed.
Will every decision work out exactly as planned?
Probably not.
Mine certainly didn't.
But every leap taught me something. Every setback strengthened me. Every unfamiliar situation made me more agile. Every new beginning gave me confidence for the next one.
Seventeen years, four cities, countless transitions, and one enduring lesson:
You do not build resilience by avoiding uncertainty. You build it by walking towards it.
As women, we are often conditioned to seek certainty before we act. Yet some of our greatest breakthroughs happen when we decide to act despite uncertainty.
So if an opportunity excites you and scares you a little at the same time, pay attention.
That feeling is often growth knocking on your door.
Take the opportunity.
Move to the new city.
Accept the challenging role.
Build the new capability.
Raise your hand.
Take the punt.
Because careers are rarely built by staying where it feels safe.
They are built by embracing possibility, learning through change, and having the courage to bet on yourself.
And perhaps the greatest validation of all is seeing that same mindset take root in the next generation. Every city changed us a little. Every transition taught us something new. Every new beginning made us more adaptable, more resilient, and more open to the possibilities that lie ahead.
Because growth rarely comes from standing still.
It comes from having the courage to take the next step, even when the destination isn't fully visible. And trust me, that is a risk worth taking. ❤️.
